Dr. John M. Young

Assistant Professor of Clinical Research and Leadership

John M. Young is a healthcare scholar-practitioner and Assistant Professor of Clinical Research and Leadership at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. With more than 20 years of experience in academic medicine, policy and community health, Dr. Young specializes in healthcare quality and leadership. 

A Chicago native, Dr. Young began his career at Cook County Health, where he helped reestablish Provident Hospital, the nation’s first African American-owned hospital. After completing a Minority Management Development Fellowship, he worked with leading organizations, including Johns Hopkins Health System, where he founded the provider relations department for Priority Partners, a Medicaid managed care organization. 

Dr. Young played a pivotal role in shaping the Affordable Care Act (ACA) during his tenure at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). He contributed to key ACA provisions and helped launch innovative payment models, including Accountable Care Organizations and bundled payments. 

At GW, Dr. Young brings his rich professional experience into the classroom, applying a scholar-practitioner model to mentor future leaders in healthcare. Through his teaching, he equips students to address real-world challenges while advancing healthcare quality and equity.
