Dr. Christopher Kayes

Chair, Department of Management; Professor of Management

Dr. Chris Kayes, Ph.D., is a professor of management at the George Washington University School of Business and a senior fellow at the GW Center for Excellence in Public Leadership. Known for his expertise in experiential learning, leadership and organizational resilience, Dr. Kayes has authored five books, including Organizational Resilience and the Learning Advantage. 

During his tenure, Dr. Kayes served as interim dean, chair of the Department of Management, and founding director of the Master of Human Resource Management Program. As interim dean, he led a financial turnaround, reinstated the doctoral program and strengthened ties with alumni and the business community. Under his leadership as department chair, diversity among faculty increased, and the department gained national recognition, ranking among the top 50 in the U.S. 

Dr. Kayes’ research has been featured in more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, including award-winning analyses on the 1996 Mt. Everest disaster and goal setting. An acclaimed global educator, he has taught at universities worldwide — including in Singapore, Croatia and Finland — and consulted for organizations such as the World Bank, U.S. State Department and Capital One. 

The recipient of two Outstanding Teaching awards, Dr. Kayes continues to inspire students and leaders through innovative teaching and thought leadership.
